Homework 8

All homework must be submitted via Blackboard. Your answers must be in a MS Word (DOCX) or PDF format. Your submitted document should have sections corresponding to those in this homework.

Please make sure that you have watched the videos and have done the readings. Everyone should do this independently; you can discuss the process, but the answers are expected to be different.

Include graphs as images in your document. Use the lecture notes as a guide.

1. Study designs (60%)

Consider three studies in the data folder: Anderson, Bos-Touwen, and Durand.

Write a short note on each study mentioning (a) target population, (b) study population, (c) sampling design, (d) units of observation (identify multiple levels, if present). Justify your choices.

2. Distributions (40%)

Play with the distributions visuals and comment how the median changes for the following distributions as you change the parameter mentioned (keeping any other parameters fixed). Justify your answers.

Binomial as you change n
Normal as you change σ
Lognormal as you change σ
Uniform as you change the lower limit

Optional: For all the distributions in the visualization are there parameter settings which make the distributions approximately normal? If so, which ones look approximately normal and for which parameter values?
